Toriyama Sekien (鳥山 石燕, Toriyama Sekien) was born in 1712 and died on September 22, 1788. He was an 18th-century scholar and an ukiyo-e artist of Japanese folklore. He was the teacher of Utamaro and, a painter of the Kanō school. He also took up printmaking. Toriyama is most famous for his attempt to catalogue all species of yōkai in the "Hyakki Yagyō" series.
